What trace/logs are available in the Output Management Web Viewer 11.5 (OMWV) and how and when do I use them?

Introduction:

There are times when you may want to monitor what the OMWV application is doing, either to provide debugging information to Support or simply to learn how users are utilizing the system. Several trace and log facilities are built into the OMWV. How and when do you use which.

 

 

Instructions:

Support Logging or OMLogging produces a daily output file with the name format OMlogmmddyy, Audit Logging produces a .csv (spreadsheet file) per month and the CheckOM Utility produces a text file on demand.

Support Logging (OMlogmmddyy)

A new file is started each calendar day after the option is manually enabled from the OMWV AdminTool. OMLog files contain OMWV application actions and some communications information. These files are intended more for Support purposes than for customer use.

The OMLog is turned on from the AdminTool File, Configure Server Settings - you then select your server and that action activates the settings which include logging level (recommended levels are 50, 150 and 250, depending on the degree of information needed) and output file path. Running at 50 allows you to capture critical events and you should only run at 250 when directed to do so by CA Support.

The output is written to the output file path noted above. The default location is C:\window\temp, but you can set this to wherever you would like.

Audit Logging (.csv file) Log

An Audit log is written to for a calendar month, after which a new Audit Log file is created. The Audit log is intended to allow customers to see which users are performing what types of actions.

Audit logging is enabled by going to the OMWV AdminTool, File, Preferences, and the Auditing tab. As soon as even one of the options listed there is selected, an audit log is started and it will continue as long as any selected events trigger log entries.

Output for Audit Logging is directed to wherever the Windows system variable %TEMP% points, usually this also defaults to C:\windows\temp.

CheckOM Utility

CheckOM.exe must be run manually. It is distributed with and found in the program groups for the OMWV and OMDV. CheckOM output contains system and Output Management Products configuration information.

Once the CheckOM utility is run, you have options to be able to Print, Save or email the output.

The output is written to the screen, but after it displays, if you select the save option you get a standard dialogue box which allows you to write the output file to whichever location you choose. It will default to the same folder in which the utility resides.
