What are the steps to cleanup a failed installation of CA Client Automation Asset Intelligence from a Windows system?

This document details all major changes made to the machine during the CA Asset Intelligence installation. In the unlikely event that the installation was interrupted before completion (i.e., due to loss of power or unexpected reboot during installation) use this document as a reference for performing cleanup prior to a subsequent installation.

If it becomes necessary to uninstall try to use add /remove programs however if that is not possible you can go through areas to make sure CA Asset Intelligence is removed prior to the reinstall attempt.  

The areas to remove are:

  • Windows User Groups
  • Folders
  • Virtual Directory path and Web Server Virtual Directories
  • Asset Intelligence Database in MSSQL
  • Asset Intelligence service
  • Asset Intelligence registry keys
  • ODBC creation registry keys
  • Temporary installation log files


Windows User Groups

The CA Asset Intelligence setup creates two Windows user groups, AIAdmin and AIPublic. These user groups control access to the Admin and Public User Interfaces, respectively.

Program File Path

The default install path for the Unicenter Asset Intelligence "program files" is C:\Program Files\CA\Unicenter Asset Intelligence. Could also be under C:\Program Files (x86)\CA\Asset Intelligence

Please note that this path is customizable and will reflect any custom path that the user may have entered when prompted during setup.

Virtual Directory Path and Web Server Virtual Directories

Unicenter Asset Intelligence creates two virtual directories during installation: admin and public. The admin directory contains the files to support the Admin User Interface (CAAIAdmin). The public directory contains the files to support the Public User Interface (CAAI). The default install path for these directories is C:\CA\AssetIntelligence.

Please note that this path is customizable and will reflect any custom path that the user may have entered when prompted during setup.

When viewed from the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, these directories would appear as follows:

To completely remove these virtual directories from your system, you must delete them in both the Windows file structure as well as the IIS Manager.

Asset Intelligence Database (CAAIDB)

By default, the uninstallation of CA Asset Intelligence does not remove the Asset Intelligence database. This is intended to prevent users from accidentally removing their database. To remove the Asset Intelligence database from a system, you need to do the following:

  1. Launch the Microsoft SQL Enterprise Server Manager

  2. Locate the CAAIDB database

  3. Select it and choose delete

AI Service

The Unicenter Asset Intelligence setup installs a Windows service titled "CA Unicenter Asset Intelligence". This service is used to automate the collection of data from selected remote Unicenter Asset Management data sources on a pre-defined schedule.

By default the service is set to collect the UAM data sources Monday through Friday at 3:00 AM. The time and day the service runs the collect can be configured in:

<InstallDrive>\<Virtual Directory Installation Path>\Public\Common\UAI.dat


Please note that this service must be stopped first, in order to remove it.


In order to facilitate communication with local and remote CA Client Automation Management databases, the CA Asset Intelligence setup creates an ODBC System Data Source called "CAAISQL".

AI Registry Keys

The following registry hive is created to support the Unicenter Asset Intelligence installation:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\Unicenter Asset Intelligence could also be under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node on a 64 bit Operating system.

ODBC Creation Registry Keys

The following registry keys are created to support the creation of the ODBC SysDSN "CAAISQL"

Temporary Installation Log File

Product installation progress and record of any errors detected during the setup process are logged to the AssetIntelligenceR11Setup.log in the system %TEMP% folder.

Subsequent installations will overwrite this file. If you intend to re-run the installation and want to use this file as reference, you will need to rename it or move it to another location.
