For every user that accesses the MICS Workstation Facility (MWF) there are user data sets allocated depending upon the functions used. These data sets have Standard default names prefixed with the USERID. These default names can be changed in MWF. It is important to identify the functionality of these data sets and the information they contain.

The MICS Workstation Facility (MWF) is a powerful facility that provides access to MICS database files. One of the most frequently used features of MWF is MICF. MICF allows access to the MICS data base, run a wide variety of standard inquiries, create inquiries with ease, save inquiry output into a catalog that can be displayed at any time. There are a wide number options that a user can control simply by setting the options.

User data set names used in MICF:

  • userid.MICS.USER.TABLES contains Private Inquiries stored in form of ISPF table members. This Partitioned Data Set also contains an ISPF table member called ICFOCTL which contains the PRIVATE catalog where the inquiry outputs reside.

  • userid.MICS.USER.OUTPUT contains the output of Inquiries that were saved into the catalog. Each Inquiry has 3 members created of the form Lx, Mx, Rx. Where x is a number. Lx contains the SASLOG of the Inquiry, Mx contains the MICSLOG and Rx contains the Report.

  • userid.MICS.USER.DATA contains Color Graphics SAS/GRAPH GREPLAY catalogs for Color Graphics Inquiries that were saved into the PRIVATE Catalog.

  • userid.USER.BATCH***.ICFUSER contains color graphics outputs from MICF Inquiries executed in batch mode when you tell MICF to hold inquiry output for later online review.

  • userid.USERBATCH***.LOG contains the SASLOG from MICF inquiries executed in batch mode when you tell MICF to hold inquiry output for later online review.

  • userid.USER.BATCH***.MICSLOG contains the MICSLOG from MICF inquiries executed in batch mode when you tell MICF to hold inquiry output for later online review.

  • userid.USER.BATCH***.MICSLOG contains the MICSLOG from MICF inquiries executed in batch mode when you tell MICF to hold inquiry output for later online review.

  • userid.USER.BATCH***.REPORT contains printed reports from MICF inquiries executed in batch mode when you tell MICF to hold inquiry output for later online review.

  • userid.MICS.USER.CAPACITY contains capacity planning database files defined and loaded by the Capacity Planning online facility.

Since MICF relies on the above data sets for access to Inquiries saved or created in the Private catalog and also for the outputs of Inquiries that are saved in the Private Catalog, it is important to realize the impact if these data set names are changed. The above mentioned data set names are the default names as delivered. They may however be changed by the user by choosing option 0 under MICF (MICF Options) and then choosing option 6 (Data Set Allocation Parameters).

In addition to the above mentioned data sets, there are other data sets that are allocated on a temporary basis. For more information on these and other MICF data sets, refer to Section C.1.1.3 of the Data Base Retrieval and Reporting Guide.
