Description:

When applying a CA SDM Patch, first read the patch instructions in the provided ReadMe ( entirety. Each patch normally has specific steps documented in it, which might override normal known approach of patch install. This document provides specific high level approaches that normally apply in an Advanced Availability environment.

Solution:

In a normal situation where a patch installs applying an updated module or modification to be updated through out, below workflow would apply:

  • Verify the impact
  • Stop the Standby Server
  • Perform Rolling Maintenance on Standby Server (ex: apply the patch, modification)
  • Suppress Version Control between Standby Server and Background Server (on Standby Server execute: pdm_server_control -v)
  • Start the Standby Server
  • Promote Standby Server to Background Server
  • Perform Rolling Maintenance on Old Background Server (ex: apply the patch, modification)
  • Start the Old Background Server (this now becomes current Standby Server)
  • Perform Rolling Maintenance on all Application Servers (normally done by Quiesceing the server, removing it from load balancing and then applying needed patches followed by restart of CA SDM Service)

If you need to install a new Options Manager setting (as part of the patch you are installing or per normal change cycle), the process is slightly different. Because its an Options Manager option, we should NOT suppress Version Control for this scenario.

  • Verify the impact
    • Logon to Background Server Web UI
    • Install/Deinstall the needed Options
  • Restart the Standby SDM Service (Options are propagated to Standby)
    • Promote Standby Server to Background Server
    • Restart Old Background SDM Service (Options are propagated to this server now, it becomes current Standby)
  • Restart CA SDM Service on any remaining Standby servers
  • Perform Rolling Maintenance on all Application Servers (normally done by Quiesceing the server, removing it from load balancing and then applying needed patches followed by restart of CA SDM Service)

Note: It is still recommended to follow the route documented in a patch read me file as such a document would contain any specific requirements for that patch.
