We have the product CA Symdump for CICS, and would like to determine if the product is being used and to what extent. What tools, procedures, or processes does CA have to help identify the usage and preferably the user(s) of the Symdump software product? Other than removing the individual software keys and waiting for someone to complain is there a less invasive way to determine usage?
CA Symdump CICS gets installed into every CICS region and there is no batch reports you can run to display usage of the products.
With Symdump CICS I would check the RPL for each CICS region. For release 8.5 and below I would search for a load library that has a suffix of CACICS. The load library is HLQ.CACICSXX where XX is the CICS level. For release 9.0 I would search the RPL for CABACI. In release r 9.0 the Symdump load library for CTS 4.2 would be HLQ. CABACI67. Release 9.1 the Symdump load library is called HLQ.CABALOAD and in release 10 the load is CAVHLOAD.
CA Symdump CICS captures transaction dumps to a VSAM file with an FCT - DD of PROTDMP. You can check your CSD entries for FCT entry PROTDMP and the Primary menu transaction SYMD
Symdump CICS is usually started at PLT time. You can search the CICS log for message CASD6049 and PLTPI entry is
CASD6049 SYMDUMP V9.1000 COLD ASM 05/01/2015 14.02
You can also check the CICSLOG for any messages that start with CASD* which are generated at dump capture time.
To see what dumps were captured at a clear screen enter transaction SYMD and select option 1 for analysis.
