We wanted to use SSL instead of TCP as it is more secure. We read that there is some overhead using SSL encryption, which varies considerably depending on the hardware. We want to make sure that this change does not affect the normal usage. Please suggest.

Enabling SSL would not cause any noticeable performance impact for a normal use by customers.

There would be some latency during the initial SSL handshake between the client and server to agree upon the symmetric cipher to be used for subsequent communication.

Once the initial communication is established the latency is negligible for the subsequent communication in the same session.

With most of the modern CPU hardware, the entire latency due to SSL communication is predominantly less for a normal use of the product.
