Unable to launch Standalone Introscope Workstation Client when Windows ClearType Font settings are enabled.

How to address a standalone APM Workstation launch issue that could be experienced in a Windows environment when "ClearType" font settings are enabled.


On a Windows environment, if "ClearType" font settings are enabled, the Standalone Workstation Client will fail to launch.

Debug level Workstation logs will show an exception similar to the following:

 	java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: -60397977 incompatible with Text-specific LCD contrast key

 	at sun.awt.windows.WDesktopProperties.getDesktopAAHints(Unknown Source)

 	at sun.awt.windows.WDesktopProperties.getProperties(Unknown Source)

 	at sun.awt.windows.WToolkit.lazilyInitWProps(Unknown Source) 	
 	at sun.awt.windows.WToolkit.lazilyLoadDesktopProperty(Unknown Source) 	
 	at java.awt.Toolkit.getDesktopProperty(Unknown Source) 	
 	at com.wily.ui.WilyUIUtilities.isHighContrast(WilyUIUtilities.java:1268)

This is a known issue with the 1.6 Oracle JRE that is used by the Workstation client.

To address the issue, you will need to disable "ClearType" settings by taking the following steps:

  1. Go to:

    1. Control Panel

    2. Appearance and Personalization

    3. Display

    4. Select Adjust ClearType Text

    5. Deselect Turn On ClearType

    6. Click Next for the remaining steps until you have completed the wizard

    7. Click Finish.

After these changes are applied, the APM Workstation will be able to launch successfully.
