When attempting to export an application from Automation Studio, you may run into a failure with an error message similar to the one below.

“error exporting element Install Application to file C:\Users\tester\Desktop\export.dat null”

This error suggests that there is a null value somewhere within the application you are attempting to export. To begin troubleshooting, you can search through the nolio_export.log file, which can be found in the logs directory of the management server.

Step 1
First search for "NullPointerException" in the nolio_export.log file, you should find entries similar to the ones below.

2014-12-19 10:39:49,662 [http-nio-8080-exec-10] DEBUG (com.nolio.platform.server.dataservices.services.exportimport.model.exportdata.DataExporter:262)- Exporting Parameter folder:null
2014-12-19 10:39:49,663 [http-nio-8080-exec-10] ERROR (com.nolio.platform.server.dataservices.services.exportimport.model.exportdata.DataExporter:134) - Run time exception caught while exporting application Test Application [10]
java.lang.NullPointerException

Typically there is a corrupted process that is causing this to happen. Usually this process is no longer in use, otherwise you'd be having failures running deployments which you'd probably notice before attempting to export the application. Now we'll need to find the problem process.

Step 2
Now we'll need to find the problem process. Search for the last occurrence of "Start Exporting published process" before the previous result for "NullPointerException". You should see a similar entry as the one listed below, this will list the process that it was attempting to export when it threw the error and failed.

2014-12-19 10:39:49,611 [http-nio-8080-exec-10] DEBUG (com.nolio.platform.server.dataservices.services.exportimport.model.exportdata.DataExporter:309) - ---------------------Start Exporting published process [PublishedProcess{name='Install App (OLD)',id=643}]

So according to the log entry above, the "Install App (OLD)" process is the problem. In this case, the process was no longer in use and was removed. After removal, the application was able to be exported properly from Automation Studio.
