Introduction:

When opening a case with the CA OPS/MVS team, customers will typically be asked to provide an archived OPSLOG to aid the product teams in addressing their question or diagnosing their concern.

Background:

For those unfamiliar with what OPSLOG is, just know that it's essentially a SYSLOG with enhanced searching and filtering capabilities which can be used to not only diagnose issues with the OPS/MVS product, but other issues within an environment as well - making it immensely valuable to all users and engineers.

Environment:
All currently supported CA OPS/MVS releases. Note however that some panels and instructions are release-specific. To see if a function or feature is available for your release of OPS/MVS, please review the product Release Notes.
Instructions:

How to Capture an Archived OPSLOG

When capturing OPSLOG, you may choose an existing archive (via the OPSVIEW 7.1.4 Tracking Panel) to package or create your own (via the OPSLOG 7.1.2 Archive panel).

Both methods result in the creation of the OPSLOG to a sequential dataset for packaging. Instructions for both processes are outlined in the OPS/MVS documentation set, hyperlinked at these locations:

How to Manage the OPSLOG Archive Tracking System (Option 7.1.4)

How to Archive an OPSLOG (Option 7.1.2)

Validation of the Archived OPSLOG Dataset

Once the OPSLOG dataset has been complete, you can verify it's success by restoring the archived log via the OPSVIEW panels below:

How to Restore an Archived OPSLOG (Option 7.1.3)
How to Browse a Copied or Restored OPSLOG (Option 7.1.1)

Package and Transfer the Archived OPSLOG Dataset

Select one of the following methods for sending the archived OPSLOG to CA Support:

  • Via Traditional FTP
    • TERSE (Sample)
      //MICKE01A JOB (000000000),TERSE,
      //             CLASS=B,MSGCLASS=X,
      //             NOTIFY=MICKE01
      //*
      //STEP1   EXEC PGM=TRSMAIN,PARM=PACK

      //OUTFILE   DD DSN=OPSLOG.TERSED.ARCHIVE.DATASET.CREATED.ABOVE,
      //             DISP=(NEW,CATLG),
      //             UNIT=SYSDA,
      //             SPACE=(CYL,(800,99),RLSE)
      //*

    • FTP (Sample)
      //MICKE01A JOB (000000000),FTP,
      //             CLASS=B,MSGCLASS=X,
      //             NOTIFY=MICKE01

  • Via the CA SYSVIEW FTPCA Command
    • Prerequisites
      • First-time users will need to issue the "JOBCARD" command from the CA SYSVIEW menu and ensure the appropriate job card information is provided.

Additional Information:

  • When capturing an archived OPSLOG using the OPSVIEW 7.1.4 option, remember that you must restore the OPSLOG(s) first. Upon restore completion, proceed to the OPSVIEW 7.1.2 (Archive) panel.

  • Note that the OPSLOG tracking facility is only available if OPSLOG archiving is configured. For more information on this topic, please view the hyperlink titled: "Archiving and Merging OPSLOG Data".

  • During the OPSLOG Validation process, note that this step requires that you allocate an OPSLOG dataset larger than the OPSLOG being viewed. Failure to do so will result in an RC=33 abend with the utility.
