Description:

Scenario for the following user
DisplayName - CULTRARA, Robert
UserId - cultrarar
Email - r.cultrara@toto.org

When I search for a user using the People Picker tool, here are the outputs based on my search queries:

  1. If I type "cultra", I get both displayname and userid in two separate entries for each claim, however I don't get the email claim which contains cultra in the email address claim.

  2. If I type "robert", I don't get any results for this user, though Robert is part of the DisplayName claim

  3. If I type "r.cultrara", I get only "r.cultrara@toto.org in the search results.

However what I expected is when I type "cultra" in the search query I should have got either one user with all this claims or I should have got all three claims. The results we get doesn't match that theory.

Solution:

The search is done by design, we are searching for the matching first chars in the field and SharePoint claims provider appends star (*) at the end of search string.

so for a search : cultra you get :

DisplayName - CULTRARA, Robert
UserId - cultrarar

so for a search : r.cul you get :
Email - r.cultrara@toto.org
