Introduction:

This document describes how to move files associated with the CA SM Domain Server and CA SM Distribution Server off of the C: drive and onto a different drive on the system.

Background:

The "public" and "private" data used by the Domain and Distribution services are located in "C:\Users\Public\CA\SM" and "C:\ProgramData\CA\SM" respectively by default.

The public folder contains logs. Disk usage of this folder is generally low during normal runtime.

The private folder contains all Policies, Templates, and Deployment related files for SystemEDGE and AIM. This folder is about 1 GB in size on fresh install. This overall size of this folder will grow by a few hundred MB on upgrades (as newer sysedge deployment files are installed). It will also grow minimally during normal runtime - most files used for Policies & Templates are small (but the overall number of files will increase with each added Policy, Template and managed SystemEDGE agent).

Instructions:

To move these folders, do the following:

  1. Stop all VAIM services
  2. Assuming that the base VAIM install is located in D:\CA\VirtualAssurance, create new directories in the D:\CA directory:
    1. "D:\CA\Public" for the "C:\Users\Public\CA\SM" directory
    2. "D:\CA\Private" for the "C:\ProgramData\CA\SM" directory
  3. Open "C:\Users\Public" in Explorer, and move the CA directory to "D:\CA\Public" - this will ensure all contents and structure are kept
  4. Open "C:\ProgramData" in Explorer, and move the CA directory to "D:\CA\Private" - this will ensure all contents and structure are kept
  5. Again, assuming that the base VAIM install is located in D:\CA\VirtualAssurance, open D:\CA\VirtualAssurance\bin\smglobals.ini in notepad.
  6. Modify CAISM_PUBLIC_DATA to point to the Public new path:
    CAISM_PUBLIC_DATA=D:\CA\Public\CA\SM
  7. Modify CAISM_LOG_PATH to point to the new Log path (this uses the Public path as a base):
    CAISM_LOG_PATH=D:\CA\Public\CA\log
  8. Modify CAISM_PRIVATE_DATA to point to the new Private path:
    CAISM_PRIVATE_DATA=D:\CA\Private\CA\SM
  9. Restart all VAIM services
