Question:

To do an incremental backup I need to backup those VSAM files that were changed since the last backup.

The last update date is in the VSAM catalog as System-Timestamp field, but I did not find reference to that field in CA FAVER2 VSAM Data Protection for z/VSE user guide.

Can CA FAVER2 VSAM Data Protection for z/VSE do incremental Backup ?

Answer:

By itself CA FAVER2 VSAM Data Protection for z/VSE cannot,

it works in conjunction with CA MasterCat VSAM Catalog Management for z/VSE

and CA MasterCat VSAM Catalog Management for z/VSE can search files by LASTUPDATED and build a "FVRLIST".

This list is a SAM file in CA FAVER2 VSAM Data Protection for z/VSE format.

Once this list is built, CA FAVER2 VSAM Data Protection for z/VSE with OPTION MCTLIST can BACKUP/RESTORE from that list.

from the CA FAVER2 VSAM Data Protection for z/VSE User Guide:

MCTLIST

Use the MCTLIST parameter to restore clusters using a list of names generated by MASTERCAT.

The ddnames specified in MCTLIST point to DLBLs that

describe the data sets that contain the CA MasterCat VSAM Catalog Management for z/VSE generated lists (see the

CA MasterCat VSAM Catalog Management for z/VSE User's Guide for details on generating name lists).

You may specify one or more ddnames with the MCTLIST parameter and

optionally specify additional cluster names via the DSN parameter.
