I am seeing "## fragments" WARN message being reported while taking an online dump (snapshot) of a datastore.

Description

When taking an online dump (i.e. snapshot of DSA using 'dump dxgrid-db;' command), you might see WARN messages related to # of fragments, even though system reports the dump to be completed successfully.

e.g.

[1096137024] 20091127.040928.159 WARN : Dump started
[1096137024] 20091127.040931.889 WARN : Dump completed, 19 fragments

Solution

The above message is normal and there is nothing to worry about.

The "19 fragments" message in above example indicates that there were updates being performed while the dump was in progress. If there are updates processed during the backup, then the original value (before the update) is stored so that the backup is consistent.
This is not an error, it just indicates that there were updates being performed during the backup.

NOTES:

  1. '19' in this case is just an example. This can be any number depending on what/how the DSA was being utilized at the time when snapshot of datastore being taken.
  2. Even though this document refers to CA Directory R12.0 SP1, it is valid/true for any later SP versions as well.
