How to Determine What Version of SNMP eHealth Uses to Poll a Target Element?

INTRODUCTION

Determining what version of SNMP eHealth uses to Poll a target element is a common question. This article answers the question in depth.

ANSWER

The easiest way to determine what version of SNMP eHealth is using to poll an element is to look into the Mib Translation File (MTF) assigned to that element. The init section of the MTF will include a statement setting the SNMP version used by polling to version '2c' for any element that is not intended to use version 1. If the action to setSnmpVersion is not present in the init section, eHealth is using the default version of SNMP and is using version 1 in polling.

Following is an excerpt from an MTF that DOES cause eHealth to use SNMPv2c:

   mib mib2
   {
       file mib2.mib       # default path is $TRAKKER_DIR/poller
       version 2
       agent "MIB2 (wan port) with 64 bit counters, v2c"
       elementType genericWanIf

       init
       {
           setSnmpVersion ("2c")
       }

}
