Description:

We have an application that creates reports and will fax them.

We would like CA Spool to manage the communication with the fax server.

What are the required definitions with CA Spool to handle reports and have them faxed?

Solution:

There is no special FAX support in CA Spool, but CA Spool can interface with fax servers like FaxPlus/Open, RightFax, GFI FAXmaker and others via either the TCP/IP LPR/LPD protocol or via the CA Spool email interface.

To define a destination NODE using these protocols, CA Spool needs a TCP/IP address and a queue name.

The following definition could be used as a starting point:

 DEFNODE FAXSRV,TCPIP,GROUP=1,ACQUIRE=WORK,RELEASE=NOWORK,
           ENDFF=NO,FCB=6,VFC1,SEP=0

 NODE FAX,FAXSRV,TCPHOST=FaxServer,TCPPRT=FAXQueueName,TCPDRIV=LPR

Since it does not provide back reporting, the LPR/LPD protocol cannot provide information to make users know whether the fax was actually received or they were errors after the fax file has been received by the FAX server.

FAX servers often support both LPR/LPD and SMTP protocols.

Using the SMTP protocol with MAILSTAT=[YES | NO | DELAY | FAILURE | SUCCESS] some FAX servers might report back through email.

 DEFNODE FAXSRV,TCPIP,GROUP=1,ACQUIRE=WORK,RELEASE=NOWORK,
                ENDFF=NO,FCB=6,VFC1,SEP=0

 NODE FAX,FAXSRV,TCPHOST=FaxServer,TCPPRT=FAXQueueName,TCPDRIV=SMTP,
                 DRIVPRM1='MAILSTAT=YES'
