Question:

How do I configure SystemEDGE to monitor the size of a log file to ensure it is continually being written to?

Environment:

ANY; Windows; Unix; Linux

Answer:

1.  Create a log file monitor

  • Log File/Directory Name:  Full path to the file… example  C:\Temp\ex*.log
  • Search Filter:  What it will look for in the log. (In this case  .* would work fine)
  • Severity: None in this case.
  • Click the  Save button

2.  Make a threshold monitor:

  • ObjectClass: LogMonitorEntry [Log file monitors]
  • Object Attribute: logMonitorLogFileSize [Size of file/directory]
  • Object Instance: Full path to the file… or index of log monitor.
  • Interval: Length it monitors. (example 60 = 1 minute)
  • Threshold Configuration Tab Operator: less than
  • Value: 1
  • Scale 1
  •  Sample Type: delta value
  • Click the Save button

Additional Information
What this configuration accomplishes:

  • A delta monitor has been defined in the above threshold of less than 1 which equals 0 (When using a scale of 1)
  • This means that is the change in the size of the log file is less than 1 byte no writes have occurred to the log and SystemEDGE will send a trap.
