Introduction:

The CA Hardware Interface Service for z/OS enables a product to retrieve information from the Hardware Management Console (HMC). A query can be sent to the service, which interrogates the HMCthrough the Base Control Program internal interface (BCPii).

Background:

The CA Hardware Interface Service for z/OS enables a product to retrieve information from the Hardware Management Console (HMC). A product can send a query to the service, which in turn interrogates the HMC through the Base Control Program internal interface (BCPii).

In OPS/MVS, the ADDRESS HWS host command environment requires the CA Common Services Hardware Interface Service (HiSrv) to interact with IBM’s BCPii which allows you to perform the following tasks:

-      Execute hardware commands through BCPii.

-      Retrieve system attributes through BCPii.

-      Update system attributes through BCPii.

ADDRESS HWS requires that the INITHWS parameter must be set to YES.

It can happen that, starting the HISRV task, it gets the error:

NS0201 P-FILE: SSMHBI=0
NS0203 ERROR IN ABOVE PARMS AT POSITION 1 - UNRECOGNISED PARAMETER.
NS0205 PARM: SSMHBI=0
NS0209 ERRORS DETECTED IN SSI STARTUP PARAMETERS
NS0104 NMSSI TERMINATING - PARM ERROR.

…

How to bypass it?

Environment:
CA OPS/MVS
Instructions:

In the CA Common Services for z/OS - 14.1 Installing Guide, section ‘CA Hardware Interface Service Installation and Setup’, it is explained how to customize and start the HISRV task.

The section ‘Hardware Interface Service Initialization Parameters’ reports all the parameters that can be customized before starting it.

One of them is:

SSMHBI=heartbeat_interval

For SSM=YES, specifies how often to send heartbeats to CA OPS/MVS Event Management and Automation SSM. The heartbeat interval is in minutes. A value of zero indicates no heartbeat.

Initial value: 5Limits: 0 through 60

To solve this problem it is necessary to specify SSMHBTI= instead of  SSMBHI= as initialization parameter.
