This information may be useful when you consult with Microsoft corporation regarding the licensing for Sharepoint.

Question:

How does SDM interact with the Sharepoint server when the Sharepoint Search(Federated Adapter) is implemented?

Environment:
SDM r12.9, SDM r14.1Sharepoint 2013
Answer:

SDM interacts with Microsoft Sharepoint server by the below 2 feature(Crawler Surface and Federated Search).

Sharepoint will crawl the SDM content by accessing the SDM data. The crawler surface on SDM will communicate with Sharepoint by validating a specific user that is set the configuration in the crawler_surface_config.xml.

???<SDM installation folder path>\bopcfg\www\CATALINA_BASE_FS\webapps\fscrawl\WEB-INF

The federated search feature on the SDM will access Sharepoint when the user searches the SDM content using Sharepoint Search. The federated search uses a specific user in the sharepoint.xml in the below path for the authentication to Sharepoint. Even if there is huge number of users who use the web interface with sharepoint search, a specific user in the sharepoint.xml only accesses the sharepoint without using the logged in user's userid.
