Question:

How can I blank out, set to NULL, or empty, a data field using the ITAM Data Importer?

Environment:

CA Asset Portfolio Management (APM) 12.9 or 14.x release

Answer:

In APM 12.9, T5EM2402 or higher patch level and in APM 14.1, T57T101 or higher patch level, a new system configuration field has been introduced,
'String representing No Data or Null Value in Import Data File'.

The new configuration field is located under:  Administration -> System Configuration -> Data Importer Engine

This field allows you to enter the data value that you want to represent a NULL value.

By default, this value is NULL.  This means that whenever the word NULL is encountered in an import data file, then during import, the data will be emptied, or set to NULL.

You can choose any other word to represent a Null value.  For example, in the case where 'Null' may be a valid user last name, you may want to change the value to '$NULL$', and then replace all Null occurrences in the data file with the word $NULL$.

If the data file row does NOT contain a value, then the data is NOT updated.

In the sample data file below, the telephone number for Contact1 will be emptied, but the telephone number for Contact2 will remain unchanged.

Example data file:

ContactUserID,Telephone,MiddleName

Contact1,$NULL$,A

Contact2,,B
