Getting access denied when trying to connect from DevTest to mySQL database when trying to set up external database for dashboard

Issue:
 DEVTEST installed on an AWS environment. ED works fine when you try to connect to Derby. 
When we configure it for mySQL you are getting the below error 

org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'transactionManager': Cannot resolve reference to bean 'sessionFactory' while setting bean property 'sessionFactory'; nested exception is org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'sessionFactory': Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is java.lang.NullPointerException

at com.mysql.jdbc.SQLError.createSQLException(SQLError.java:1078) 
Environment:
All supported DevTest environments 
mySQL 5.7
Cause:
The mySQL driver used was an older version. 
Resolution:
Updated the mySQL driver to a newer version  to like  mysql-connector-java-5.1.46-bin.jar
