Question:

What additional logging can be turned on to find out why maileater or mail notifications are not working?

Answer:

Usually, the regular stdlogs by themselves will provide a good insight into what is going on if maileater or mail notifications are not functioning.  One thing that Support does to quickly discern what is happening with mail functionality is to search the entire set of logs (important since the initial loss may have been some time before the observed time of loss).  One could look for all log entries that have "ERROR" and “mail” in place.

The messages in the logs will often indicate what errors the mail server is returning on its end.  It is important to note that the mail notification and maileater functionality is relatively straightforward.  SDM will take the server information it has stored (server name, userid, passport to access) and try to make either a POP3/IMAP (maileater) or a SMTP (mail notification) connection based on the information it has.

SDM logging only indicates what response it receives from the backend mail server in the event of a connection error.  Extending the logging on maileater or mail notifications rarely provides further insight of why a connection attempt would fail.
