Issue:

At 12.1.6 Web Viewer Build 173 an HTTP:// 500 error occurs. We can logon, input a report id, get a list of reports. It sometimes fails when browsing. It always fails when trying to Print/Email and Export.

Environment:
The application environment was critical to reproducing/understanding the problem.Tomcat 7.0.23 ===> 8.0.37 or via RO91790 ===> 8.0.40Java/JVM 1.6 ===> 1.8Web Viewer 12.1.5.65 ===> 12.1.6.173
Cause:

The problem was reproduced at JVM 1.8.0_71-b15 Tomcat 7.0.23 and Web Viewer 12.1 .6.173. Report browsing problems appear to be resolved (Perhaps by putting the browser into v10 compatibility mode did the trick), but Exporting and Printing/Emailing get the HTTP 500 errors/exceptions in Export.jsp and Print.jsp.

Upgrading only one (or two) of the application environment components appears to be what triggered the problem.

Resolution:

Upgrading Apache Tomcat from 7.0.23  to  8.0.37  or via RO91790 to 8.0.40 was key to resolving the matter.

Upgrading all of the application environment components to more current levels resolves lower version incompatibilities, and ultimately the entire issue.

Additional Information:

Research revealed many comparable scenarios where older versions of Tomcat are missing class formatting information for Java 1.8.x and have the same exceptions as seen here.
