Introduction:

This document provides a scenario where CA MIA customers can dynamically remove a system or group of systems from the active MIAplex dynamically, utilizing the CA MIM ALTERSYS and SETOPTION GLOBALDISPLAY FREE commands.

Background:

Prior to release 12.0, CA MIM customers could dynamically remove inactive systems from the existing MIMplex environment via the MIM REMOVE command. This command was removed from usage for two primary reasons:

  • The command could only be used in customer environments where COMMUNICATION=DASDONLY was specified.
  • The command would create affect the system indexing position of the MIM control file. Removed systems would not show in the display, but any attempts to re-use that indexing position would result in the product fatally abending. To correct this issue, the entire MIMplex needed to be recycled, specifying a Control File format on the first system, and a Checkpoint File format on all remaining lpars.

At release 12.0, the MIM ALTERSYS command was provided for all customers who met the usage criteria specified in the Environment section of this document.

Environment:
CA MIA Release 12.0 and above, utilizing MIA's Global Tape Allocation Facility (GTAF) and specifying a MIMINIT COMPATLEVEL value of '12.0'. These system aliases have been defined to the MIAplex environment:JF03,JF13,JF23,JF49This document will be removing system alias 'JF23' as it's no longer active.
Instructions:

The following is a current snapshot of this environment, showing three active systems (JF03,JF13,JF49) and one inactive system (JF49):

PART 1: Changing SETOPTION GTAF GLOBALDISPLAY FREE Parameter

Prior to issuing the ALTERSYS command, a display parameter needs to be changed from its default value in order to display the correct information following part 2 of this change.

The SETOPTION GTAF GLOBALDISPLAY FREE parameter "determines whether devices that are only defined to systems that have been freed are included in the display of global status information".

Source: MIA SETOPTION GTAF DISPLAY/GLOBAL DISPLAY

The default value displays all global devices, even those not defined to an active system. This MIM DISPLAY GLOBALUNITS output reflects the value FREE=YES:

Default:GLOBALDISPLAY(FREE=YES)

D GLO

 E65    OF       OF       UK       OF
COMMAND COMPLETE

Altering this parameter hides MIAplex systems where devices are not defined on any active systems. To change the display parameter, issue the following command on all MIMplex systems:

SETOPTION GLOBALDISPLAY(FREE=NO)
MIM0067I Command SETOPTION 706
MIM2035I SETOPTION GTAF processing complete

PART 2: Issue the MIM ALTERSYS Command

Issue the MIM ALTERSYS command to remove system alias JF23 from the MIMplex:

F MIM,ALTERSYS XXXX STATUS=DISABLED

Note that 'xxxx' represents the system being removed. In this case, JF23:

ALTERSYS JF23 STATUS=DISABLED
MIM0067I Command ALTERSYS 678
MIM0712I Processing ALTERSYS command...
MIM0706I System JF23 attribute altered: DISABLED
MIM0711I ALTERSYS Command Succeeded

A MIM DISPLAY SYSTEMS command confirms JF23 has been "disabled":

D SYS
MIM0067I Command DISPLAY 624
MIM0108I SYSTEMS DISPLAY

INDEX ALIAS SYSTEM   RELATION STATUS      OPSYS     LAST ACCESS
 01    03   JF03     LOCAL    ACTIVE      zOS  2017.208 11:09:20.04
 02    13   JF13     EXTERNAL ACTIVE      zOS  2017.208 11:09:20.03

 04    49   JF49     EXTERNAL ACTIVE      zOS  2017.208 11:09:19.99

Re-issuing the MIA DISPLAY GLOBALUNITS command will now show that system alias JF23 has been removed from the output as the system is INACTIVE.
