DE41801-Unable to create metric that existed in previous versions of the Contract

We need to create a new contract version and add a metric that does not exist in the current contract, but existed in previous version, and when saving the metric we receive the following error message: "A metric by the same name already exists. Please enter a different name". 

Why is this the case, if the metric has been removed?
The system works this way by design - the metric has to still exist in the database as part of the previous contract version definition. 

However, while the system won't allow the same contract to have a metric of the same name in a later version, it is possible to create a duplicate version of the contract, and add it to that new contract - this would effectively achieve the new metric name.
