Description:

The Parent Task Start and Finish Dates may not reflect the true minimum Start Date and maximum Finish Date to span all Child Task Dates. Going into the Child Task Assignment and changing the dates on the Assignment causes the dates on the Parent Task to reflect the exact changes you made on the one Child Task.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Create a Project with 1 team staff member

  2. Create Task 'Parent1' > 1 day

  3. Create Task 'Child1' > Jan 18 - Feb 19

  4. Create Task 'Child2' > Feb 22 - Mar 12

  5. Create Task 'Child3' > Mar 15 - Apr 16

  6. Select the 3 child tasks and indent under the parent task

After moving, the Parent Task shows:
    'Parent1' Start Date = Jan 18
    'Parent1' Finish Date = Apr 16

  7. Assign 1 team staff member to the 3 child tasks

  8. Go to 'Child3' task, click the Assignment, Properties Icon

    Change 'Child3' Start Date = Mar 22
    Change 'Child3' Finish Date = Apr 9

After saving the Parent Task shows:
'Parent1' Start Date = Mar 22 (later than the minimum Start Date of all Child Tasks)
    'Parent1' Finish Date = Apr 9

  9. Go to 'Child2' task, click the Assignment, Properties Icon

    Change 'Child2' Start Date = Mar 1
    Change 'Child2' Finish Date = Mar 5

After saving the Parent Task shows:
'Parent1' Start Date = Mar 1 (later than the minimum Start Date of all Child Tasks)
'Parent1' Finish Date = Mar 5 (earlier than the maximum Finish Date of all Child Tasks)

  10. Go to 'Child1' task, click the Assignment, Properties Icon

    Change 'Child1' Start Date = Jan 25
    Change 'Child1' Finish Date = Feb 12

After saving the Parent Task shows:
    'Parent1' Start Date = Jan 25
'Parent1' Finish Date = Feb 12 (earlier than the maximum Finish Date of all Child Tasks)

Expected: Parent Task Start Date should reflect the minimum Child Task Start Date and Parent Task Finish Date should reflect the maximum Child Task Finish Date of ALL Child Tasks.

Actual: Parent Task Start and Finish Dates are not correct and do not reflect the true minimum and maximum dates to span ALL Child Tasks.

Solution:

Workaround:

The Parent Task Dates cannot be manually modified. One method is to move all the child tasks 'outdent' from the Parent Task and then 'indent' them again and the Parent Task Dates will be updated correctly.
