Question:
We are running CA 1 R12.6 on z/OS 2.1, and we are enabling a new EMC DLM 2100 tape equipment. For this equipment we are using units type V3480, which were enabled by UIM modules provided by the vendor. The problem we have is when we try to initialize a DLM tape with TMSTPNIT. Whatever we specify on UNIT (esoteric, generic or devnum) we get message CAL0TN06: DESTINATION DEVICE NOT A TAPE DRIVE.
Answer:
When TMSTPNIT opens the tape to do the init, we open it as a temporary data set. We then write a very small file on the tape which is really the label for the tape. If SMS or another product changes the allocation of this temporary data set to DASD, the initialization will not work. TMSTPNIT must be allowed to allocate a temporary data set on the tape.
