    2 Installation Prerequisites

    2.1 Upgrading Software

    • This release of BrightStor SRM only supports upgrades from BrightStor SRM 6.4 and BrightStor SRM 6.3 Service Pack 2. If you have an older version of BrightStor SRM currently installed, you must first upgrade your existing installation to BrightStor SRM 6.3 SP2 or BrightStor SRM 6.4, before installing this release. After completing the upgrade to BrightStor SRM 6.3 SP2 or BrightStor SRM 6.4, activate the Application Server to complete the database conversion process, shut down the Application Server, and reboot the machine before upgrading to BrightStor SRM R11.

    • This release of BrightStor SRM is fully compatible with Windows and UNIX agent software distributed with BrightStor SRM 6.4. However, we recommend that you update agent software to take full advantage of the new features and enhanced performance of the new agents. You should be aware that the BrightStor SRM 6.4 Application Server will not work with Windows agents supplied with this release.

    • Before you install BrightStor SRM, please confirm that your hardware and software configurations meet the minimal requirements listed below. You should back up all data from the \Database tree before you begin to upgrade from a previous version. We recommend that you reboot your machine before starting the installation process.

    • The NetApp Qtree table will be deleted from the BrightStor SRM database during the upgrade process. This table will re-populated when the next NetApp data collection takes place.

    2.2 Application Server

    2.2.1 Hardware

    • Pentium 1.2 GHz, or higher, that supports the operating system you are running. Multiple CPUs are recommended for large installations.

Note: You are encouraged to confirm that Microsoft supports installation of Windows software on the Application Server machine. You can access the list of Windows-compatible machines at the Microsoft website, http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp.

    • Minimum of 512 MB RAM. For better performance, 1 GB (or higher) is recommended.

    • Initial minimum of 300 MB of free disk space. Additional free disk space is required in order to allow for growth of the BrightStor SRM database. Depending on the number of objects that you plan to manage, and the level of detail that you want to collect, you may need well in excess of 5 GB to store information that is collected from the network, and to save detailed historical (trend) information.

Note: If you are upgrading from an earlier version, you will need temporary storage of up to two times the size of your current database files for the database conversion.

    2.2.2 Software

    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003
      or
      Microsoft Windows XP Professional
      or
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional or Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

    • You must install the BrightStor SRM Application Server on a machine that has network connectivity. The BrightStor SRM Application Server can automatically distribute and manage agent components on Windows systems that are members of the domain where the Application Server is running, or are members of a domain with a trust relationship to it.

    2.3 Windows Client

Note that each Windows Client communicates with the Pervasive.SQL database on the Application Server. If you want to activate more than two remote Windows Client installations, you will need to buy addition license for the Pervasive.SQL database.

    2.3.1 Hardware

    • Pentium 450 MHz, or higher, that supports the operating system you are running.

Note: You are encouraged to confirm that Microsoft supports installation of Windows software on the machine that the Windows Client is to be installed on. You can access the list of Windows-compatible machines at the Microsoft website, http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp.

    • Minimum of 128 MB RAM, for better performance, 256 MB is recommended.

    • Minimum of 200 MB free disk space.

    2.3.2 Software

    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, or later, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft website, http://www.microsoft.com.

    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003
      or
      Microsoft Windows XP Professional
      or
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
      or
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation or Server) with Service Pack 6a, or better, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft support site, http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/. You must also install the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.1, or better. You can download this software from the Microsoft support site, http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm. In addition, you will need to make sure that the Microsoft Jet database engine 4.0 is installed on your machine. You can download the Jet software by going to the Microsoft website, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en, and searching for the keyword "Jet".

    2.4 Windows Agent

    2.4.1 Hardware

    • Pentium 266 MHz, or higher, that supports the operating system you are running.

    • Minimum of 256 MB RAM.

    • Minimum of 40 MB free disk space is required to install the software. Depending on the number of objects that you plan to manage, and the level of detail that you want to collect, you may need temporary storage space well in excess of 5 GB. In order to protect your managed computer, the BrightStor SRM agent will not start when there is less than 140 MB free space available in the database directory.

    2.4.2 Software

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter

    or

    Microsoft Windows XP Professional

    or

Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.
To enable collection of dynamic disk information, you need to install the Microsoft DiskPart utility. Visit the Microsoft support site, www.microsoft.com, and search for DiskPart.exe. If you choose not to install this utility, BrightStor SRM will still collect all data, except for information that is specific to dynamic disksĀ

    or

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation or Server with Service Pack 6a, or better, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft support site, http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/. In addition, Internet Explorer 4 SP1, or higher, must be installed.
