At the time of the access via the standalone.jsp link, the portal.log showed:

14 Jan 2013 19:29:09,800 ERROR [NmsAuth:585] Unable to login from request: com.liferay.portal.NoSuchUserException: No User exists with the key {companyId=10112, emailAddress=<username>@xxx.com}

Resolution:
Logged in to UMP and selected: Manage->Control Panel->Server Administration then executed the Action:

"Reindex all search indexes"

Then upon accessing the same standalone.jsp url, the prompt no longer occurred.

If one or more other user accounts are not working in an environment where you have 2 virtual hosts for your portal setup and the USM is only looking at the user database on the primary, it may be due to the fact that the users that arent working have not logged into that portal yet and therefore didn't have a user account within it. They will need to login at least one to both portals.
