After shutting my application down and stopping the Multi-User Facility (called MUF), why does my backup fail with a RETURN CODE 68 (001) and ABEND=S000 U0004?

Issue:

When trying to run a DBUTLTY command to take a backup of my CA Datacom database after shutting down my application and stopping the Multi-User Facility (called MUF), I receive a RC 68(001) and ABEND=S000 U0004.

This used to work fine before I upgraded to version 14.0.

Environment:

CA Datacom/DB version 14.0 for z/OS or
CA Datacom/AD version 14.0 for z/OS

Cause:

Version 14.0 requires that the MUF should be running for many functions, particularly when using Simplify mode. The Simplify mode provides greater integrity for the database and operational files used by a MUF, and in most cases, requires that the MUF be running to provide this capability.

There are many commands that can be executed by the DBUTLTY program; a chart in the CA Datacom/DB DBUTLTY Reference Guide, in section “Using CA Datacom/DB Utility (DBUTLTY) › Utility Function Summary” indicates which command can run in Single-User mode (with the MUF down), and which require the MUF to be running.

Because CA Datacom/AD requires the MUF to run in Simplify mode, the BACKUP command can only execute with the MUF enabled and running.

Resolution/Workaround:

The best approach is to start the MUF to run this command. However, if you are required to execute the BACKUP (or other DBUTLTY) function without MUF enabled - for example when you need to allow restart to execute, there are two ways to do this:

  • The desired command must follow another function that can only run with MUF down (not enabled), or
  • The desired function must follow a SET command that indicates the MUF status is “not enabled.” This set command is SET OPTION1=MUF_NOT_ENABLED and will force execution with the MUF down.

Additional Information:

For more information on the DBUTLTY commands, please refer to the CA Datacom/DB DBUTLTY Reference Guide.

For more information on using Simplify mode to enhance data integrity, please refer to the CA Datacom/DB Database and System Administration Guide, in the section “Introduction › Simplify Feature.”
