Issue:

Creating fiscal time periods based on a 4-4-5 week monthly period type, additional monthly periods are automatically created by the system if the period created is more than 4 weeks with the date range specified.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Log in as an administrator user.
  2. Navigate to Administration, Finance: Setup, Entities.
  3. Create an Entity or update an existing Entity.
  4. Navigate to the Fiscal Time Periods tab.
  5. Create the following monthly period definitions:
    01-Jan-2017 to 28-Jan-2017 (28 days / 4 weeks)
    29-Jan-2017 to 04-Mar-2017 (35 days / 5 weeks)
    05-Mar-2017 to 01-Apr-2017 (28 days / 4 weeks)
    02-Apr-2017 to 29-Apr-2017 (28 days / 4 weeks)
    30-Apr-2017 to 03-Jun-2017 (35 days / 5 weeks)
    04-Jun-2017 to 01-Jul-2017 (28 days / 4 weeks)

  6. Return to the Entity Fiscal Time Periods List View.
  7. DO NOT ACTIVATE THESE FISCAL TIME PERIODS.

Expected: I should see all fiscal time period date ranges displayed as originally entered
Actual: But instead I see an extra fiscal time periods. When a date range consists of 5 weeks, an additional period is created to accommodate the remaining 1 week
Based on the data entered, I see the following Fiscal Time Periods created:

01-Jan-2017 to 28-Jan-2017 (28 days - as defined)
29-Jan-2017 to 27-Feb-2017 (30 days)
28-Feb-2017 to 04-Mar-2017 (remaining 5 days)

05-Mar-2017 to 01-Apr-2017 (28 days - as defined)
02-Apr-2017 to 29-Apr-2017 (28 days - as defined)
30-Apr-2017 to 29-May-2017 (30 days)
30-May-2017 to 03-Jun-2017 (remaining 5 days)

04-Jun-2017 to 01-Jul-2017 (28 days - as defined)

Cause:

The application is working as designed and this is the expected behavior. The application has a pre-set algorithm to generate standard fiscal time periods for Monthly, Weekly, etc. For the 'Monthly' Fiscal Time Period, the maximum number of days used in the algorithm is 30. If a date range is entered that is more than 31 days, the application will create extra periods. This is only done when you are initially creating the time periods. Once the time period has been created, do not activate the periods yet. The time periods can be altered before activation to reflect the desired date range that covers more than 30 days.

Resolution:

To modify the time periods that were created in the example above, follow the steps below.
These steps assume that you have not 'Activated' any of the newly-created fiscal time periods created in the example above.
The application will not allow you to delete time periods that will cause a gap in the overall date range, therefore the steps outlined below will instruct you to delete the future time periods.

  1. Select and delete the following fiscal time periods:

    • 28-Feb-2017 to 04-Mar-2017 (remaining 5 days)
    • 05-Mar-2017 to 01-Apr-2017 (28 days - as defined)
    • 02-Apr-2017 to 29-Apr-2017 (28 days - as defined)
    • 30-Apr-2017 to 29-May-2017 (30 days)
    • 30-May-2017 to 03-Jun-2017 (remaining 5 days)
    • 04-Jun-2017 to 01-Jul-2017 (28 days - as defined)
